Parlando di Devo, ho appena scoperto che il biglietto del concerto dei Devo mi costò US$ 11.75 in prevendita. E poi dicono che Internet non serve a nulla.

Quando nella mia scuola nei sobborghi di Atlanta per la prima volta conobbi le cheerleader, pensai fossero l'ultimo stadio dell'evoluzione umana, in una logica invertita alla Devo.

Leggo ora che le stanno assumendo le imprese farmaceutiche, e mi preoccupo per la salute dell'umanità.

Lego literacy

Pare che tutti i nerd siano stati appassionati dei Lego, quindi anch'io soddisfo la condizione necessaria. Lego non investe più nei "Mindstorm", i "mattoncini" intelligenti per costruire robot etc., che tanto avevano appassionato i geek.

Petaflop

Il Chief scientist di Cray, Burton Smith, è passato a Microsoft, che crea un nuovo fronte nella guerra contro Unix, mettendo in piedi una strategia verso chi fa calcolo scientifico, mondo in cui Unix domina. Il comunicato di Cray.

Cray, un tempo massimo produttore di supercomputer, ne ha passate di tutti i colori.

Il mio primo accesso a Internet fu del tutto bizzarro: un account su un supercomputer Cray del Cineca, con una variante di Unix come sistema operativo. Circa 1989, lessi una dispensa che raccontava di  telnet e ftp e ne fui abbastanza colpito.

Nel mentre, Darpa finanzia progetti per arrivare a processare un petaflop (a thousand trillion mathematical operations) al secondo.

Clades Variana

Ci stiamo preparando tutti per il 2000esimo anniversario di uno degli eventi più importanti della storia dell'umanità. Nel 9 DC Publius Quinctilius Varus perse tre legioni, e la vita, nella foresta di Teotoburgo, determinando la fine della politica di espansione romana in Germania.

"Varus and the three legions XVII, XVIII, and XIX were somewhere near the river Weser (perhaps near modern Minden) when he learned of an insurrection in the west. He decided to return to the Rhine and make a detour through the rebellious area. The only road led through a small strip of accessible land; to the south, there were the inaccessible hills of the Teutoburg forest, and to the north, marshes made progress difficult. It was the perfect place to trap the heavy legionaries.

And so it happened. The three marching legions were a long line, easily exposed to attacks from the hills. North of modern Osnabrück, archaeologists have excavated a part of the battlefield (called Kalkriese), and many military objects were found. Other objects attest to the presence of civilians. All in all, some 20,000 people were massacred. Like his father, Varus killed himself.

The first reports of the disaster, which became known as the Clades Variana, reached Rome five days after the news of Tiberius' Pannonian victory. It is said that the emperor Augustus, on hearing the story, was unable to sleep and paced up and down through his house, exclaiming "Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!"

El ciber

Io a 8 anni al massimo smontavo i giocattoli.

“Seguro que me vienen a buscar a mí, porque le pegué a mi mamá”, afirmó el niño de ocho años cuando vio a los efectivos del Comando de Acción Preventiva en la puerta del cíber. El chico se aferró con fuerza a la computadora, pero no pudo evitar que lo trasladaran a la comisaría octava de la ciudad de Córdoba. Su madre lo había castigado prohibiéndole cruzar al cíber del barrio de Centroamérica, donde reside con ella. El chico tomó la rama de un árbol con la que golpeó a su madre y la encerró en un cuarto. Y se fue al cíber. Sus amiguitos declararon a la radio cordobesa LV3 que es un fanático de los videojuegos de Internet.
