L'URSS è tra noi

"A former oil trader named Sergey Dyomkin founded an organization called the “Union SSR” trade union, whose members believe the Soviet Union never legally collapsed. Last year, the organization published a “presidential agreement” supposedly allowing members not to pay their home utilities bills. Members actually stopped paying their bills. Utility companies are trying to recover unpaid bills through the courts, but members of Dyomkin’s trade union reject the legitimacy of Russia’s courts"

Thousands of Russians have joined something called the ‘Union SSR’ trade union, calling themselves Soviet citizens and refusing to pay their bills, Meduza, 15 gennaio 2019.

A teorie del genere sono portato a dare udienza, e mi domando quale sia lo status del Regno d'Italia.

Runaway sexual selection

“Some of the evolutionary consequences of sexual desire and choice in nature are not adaptive,” Prum writes in his recent book. “Some outcomes are truly decadent.”

E inoltre:

"In the past two decades, a cohort of biologists have dedicated themselves to studying how an animal’s “sensory bias” — its ecological niche and its particular way of experiencing the world — sculpts its appearance, behavior and desires. Like Prum, they don’t think beauty has to be adaptive. But where Prum celebrates caprice, they seek causality."

Poi:

“Some people think female preferences just somehow emerge,” Cummings says, “but what has been overlooked is that in many cases, it’s a result of environmental constraints. It’s not always random.”

Per ultimo, “Beauty is something that arises from a host of different mechanisms,” says Gil Rosenthal [...]“It’s an incredibly multilayered process.”

L'evoluzione è un meccanismo davvero molto complesso. Bello questo long-read, che inizia con la storia del bowerbird:

"When males of most bowerbird species are ready to begin courting, they set about building the structure for which they are named: an assemblage of twigs shaped into a spire, corridor or hut. They decorate their bowers with scores of colorful objects, like flowers, berries, snail shells or, if they are near an urban area, bottle caps and plastic cutlery. Some bowerbirds even arrange the items in their collection from smallest to largest, forming a walkway that makes themselves and their trinkets all the more striking to a female — an optical illusion known as forced perspective that humans did not perfect until the 15th century."

Come non riconoscersi.

Studiare

Studiare, in cinese. "Sopra sono due mani che costruiscono, sotto c'e il carattere di bambino, che guarda e impara".

Due mani che costruiscono. Ma che bello.

"Ancient forms: 斆, 斅. The former is constructed from the skeleton of 敎/教 (“to teach”) with the addition of two extra components: 1) a 𦥑 component around the top-left 爻 part, in this case signifying mingling hands (hands-on learning); 2) a 冖 (“cover”) over 子 (“child”), representing the cover of a building or school, i.e. the child learns in a roofed place. Shuowen regards 𦥑 as the phonetic component in the character, which may be true according to some Old Chinese reconstructions such as that of Pan Wuyun's, though probably not others. See 教 for more. The earliest structure may suggest its relationship with 六, with reconstruction *rug." (學, The Wictionary).
