Ieri ho visto "Selma". Vi appare un giovane Andrew Young. Ignoravo il suo ruolo nel movimento per i diritti civili, che fu assai importante. Da Wikipedia:
"In 1964, Young was named executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), becoming, in that capacity, one of King's principal lieutenants. As a colleague and friend of Martin Luther King Jr., he was a strategist and negotiator during the Civil Rights Campaigns in Birmingham (1963), St. Augustine (1964), Selma (1965), and Atlanta (1966) that resulted in the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act. He was with King in Memphis, Tennessee, when King was assassinated in 1968."
Ignoravo questi fatti. Io sapevo di Young ambasciatore all'ONU sotto Carter, e poi sindaco di Atlanta.
Avevo 16 anni e lo vidi da lontano, alla cerimonia... beh, è un po' un "anti-climax" rispetto ai fatti di Selma: l'occasione era la cerimonia di accensione dell'albero di Natale, ad Atlanta. Lui vi presenziò, essendo il sindaco, e io ero tra la folla.
Ma ricordare quella lontana visione mi ha fatto sentire più vicino, ieri, ai fatti raccontati da quel bellissimo film.
